WORK-BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES

Engineering students at General Motors

A significant portion of College Tech Prep programs is “real-world” experience. Mentoring. job-shadowing, and internship opportunities at local business and industry and YSU provide students with an introduction to careers and the world of work. These experiences bring the College Tech Prep concepts of teamwork, applied learning, critical thinking, and problem solving to life.

Internship Program

College Tech Prep offers students the opportunity to work in local business and industry in paid and unpaid internship positions.


AIIM (An Investment In Me)

The AIIM Program started in 1998, is a partnership between General Motors – Lordstown Metal Center, Kent Tech Prep Consortium, and MAC Tech Prep. It is an eleven-week engineering technology work-based learning program. College Tech Prep engineering technology juniors rotate through the various skilled trades areas in the Metal Center at General Motors Lordstown.
Students receive an introduction to all the skilled trades through job-shadowing and mentoring by the Metal Center skilled tradespersons. In addition to technical skills, job safety and teamwork are key concepts that are integral components of the 11-week program.


Healthcare Careers Awareness Program

The health technology – Choffin Career and Technical Center program and Humility of Mary Health Partners provide College Tech Prep health technology students a comprehensive view of healthcare careers. Students rotate through many of the medical and allied health departments to observe first-hand, healthcare in action. This experience helps students better understand the intricacies, i.e. requirements, day-to-day duties and rewards of each medical/health profession.

Health Technology Clinical Placements

College Tech Prep health technology students who wish to pursue phlebotomy certification can obtain clinical hours necessary for state certification. Students are placed in hospitals, clinics and professional labs in Mahoning County.

Information Technology YSU Experience

College Tech Prep information technology students can receive “real-world” experience through the YSU Work-Based Learning Experience. Students rotate through an YSU information technology service area for a term and observe and assist YSU skilled information technology staff in performing their jobs.
